How do SMD codes work?
SMD (Surface Mount Device) resistors use different coding systems to indicate their value:
3 Digit Code (±5% tolerance)
- Digits 1-2: Significant value
- Digit 3: Multiplier (number of zeros to add)
- Example:
472= 47 × 10² = 4700Ω = 4.7kΩ
4 Digit Code (±1% tolerance)
- Digits 1-3: Significant value
- Digit 4: Multiplier
- Example:
4702= 470 × 10² = 47000Ω = 47kΩ
EIA-96 Code (±1% precision tolerance)
- Digits 1-2: Value code (01-96) representing a specific value from the E96 series
- Letter: Multiplier
Z= ×0.001,Y/R= ×0.01,X/S= ×0.1A= ×1,B/H= ×10,C= ×100D= ×1000,E= ×10000,F= ×100000
“R” Notation
The letter R indicates the decimal point:
